The Care Quality Commission rates Ranworth, Eastbourne as Outstanding

Ranworth House provides care and support for up to nine people with a learning disability and/or other complex needs in Eastbourne, East Sussex. Care Quality Commission inspectors inspected the service in May 2016.

The service has been rated Outstanding for being effective, caring and responsive to peoples' needs and was rated Good for being safe and well-led. A full report of the inspection has been published at:

Deborah Ivanova, Deputy Chief Inspector for Adult Social Care in the South, said:

“This is an exemplary service working with people with learning disabilities. There are many examples of Outstanding practice that are clearly helping in delivering excellent person-centred service.

“We received many positive comments about the service and it’s encouraging to report that the people providing the support had the right skills and knowledge to meet individual needs. People were treated as individuals and the Registered Manager promoted strong person-centred skills that ensured people were listened to.

“The management are to be applauded for doing this. It is for this and many other reasons why the service has received the highest rating we can give and I congratulate them.”

People experienced excellent care and support. They were supported to live safe, fulfilled and meaningful lives in the way they wanted to. Staff knew how to safeguard people from abuse and what they should do if they thought someone was at risk.

Risks to individuals were extremely well managed and people were able to stay safe without having their freedoms restricted.

Managers and staff promoted peoples independence and encouraged positive risk taking. If an incident or accident did occur, they were well reported and investigated. Staff understood the importance of learning from incidents, so they could make sure they did not re-occur. 

Person centred care was fundamental to the service and staff made sure people were at the centre of their practice. Care plans focused on the whole person, and assessments and plans were regularly updated. People's individual preferences, needs and choices were always taken into account by the caring and compassionate staff.
